What is Politics of Nursing?

A nurse standing in a crowd

As a self-regulated profession, nursing in Canada is governed by the individual provinces and territories. Each province and territory has its own regulatory body for nurses, which sets the standards for education, practice, and registration. However, despite this decentralization, nurses across Canada face many of the same political challenges.

One of the key issues that nurses in Canada are currently facing is the nursing workforce shortage. This nursing shortage is the result of years of changes and transformations that are, in our opinion, in opposition to care. This shortage is not just a problem for nurses, but also for patients who rely on their care. This reality became evident with the multiple ED closures across the country.

Through this website, we will provide updates on the current political issues that affect nursing in Canada, as well as resources and information on how you can get involved in advocacy and policy-making. We invite you to check back regularly for the latest news and developments, and to join the conversation on the politics of nursing in Canada.

Additionally, you will find information about the main author's thesis which will mirror her findings along with the developments of nursing challenges in Canada.
